Error Messages/Browser Problems (For pop-up problems see the separate topic here) From 2005, every effort has been made to make the TGGPC website compatible with W3C web standards, which means that users should be able to access the site's content in most modern web browsers. Some older browsers (e.g. prior to Internet Explorer 6.0/Netscape 6.0) may not support some of the functionality, and users are recommended to upgrade their browser to the latest version by visiting one of the links below. Alternatively, if you are sentimentally wedded to your creaking Internet Explorer version 3.0, there is nothing to prevent you installing on your PC the latest version of a different web browser as an alternative if you find your older browser is having problems - follow the links below to find information on different web browsers. Most browsers are free to download and use, my recommendation is Mozilla Firefox, as it's relatively small, easy to use and very quick (although not as quick as Opera). The site has been extensively tested on Internet Explorer 6.0, Opera 7.54, Mozilla 1.8 (which runs the Gecko layout engine found in many browsers) and it's increasingly popular offspring Mozilla Firefox 1.0. If users find incompatibilities or errors on the TGGPC website, please report the problem, including what browser you were using, which version (try the Help menu/About....), the TGGPC web page being visited, and any specific action you were performing which generated a problem. Links to providers for program downloads/upgrades for some of the more common web browsers are included below; InternetExplorer |

Viewing The Tables If the tables aren't displaying the whole of themselves on screen in Internet Explorer, from the View menu, select Text Size, and try selecting a smaller size - for instance medium works well on a 1024 x 768 display on a 17" screen. Alternatively, you can download the information contained in the table to put into a spreadsheet or word processor program of your choosing to play around with views at your leisure - click here for details.

Can't Find What I Want The navigation menus are displayed across the top of each web page and look something like this; Simply click on the item, or if it has a drop down arrow, click to expand the menu selections further. If you cannot see the menus, see the section on parts of the page appearing blank as the menus are written in javascript (a common web programming language) and it's possible this may not be activated on your browser. If this still does not solve the problem, click here to open up a separate window with good old fashioned Hyperlinks to allow you to navigate the site.

Well despite my extensive and time consuming testing process, mistakes happen! However, if I don't know about it, I can't fix it, so let me know at mail@tggpc.co.uk.

I Get An Error Message When Loading A Page/Parts Of The Page
Appear Blank The site uses a feature called "javascript" to produce some of the more intricate parts of the web pages. If you are using the right type of web browser (as explained above), and you are still getting error messages, or seeing blank sections where you expect there to be content, your browser settings may not be allowing javascript to operate. To resolve this, follow the instructions below for your browser type; Internet Explorer - click on Tools, Internet Options then on the Security tab. Select Custom Level at the bottom, then scroll down the list of headings until you see the section titled "Script". Make sure that none of the options in the sub sections relating to scripting are disabled - if they are, try changing them to either "Enabled" or "Prompt". Netscape Navigator - click on File, Preferences, then from the categories in the left hand side of the Preferences screen click on Advanced. In the list on the right, make sure the Enable JavaScript checkbox is checked. Other Browser - Look for an "Options" or "Preferences" section and find the section on javascript, making sure javascript is not disabled. Please read the next item on security and javascript.

Security & javascript Please note that this site uses javascript to enhance functionality of it's web pages. Javascript is a set of instructions telling your computer to do something - on this website, it lays out the F1 race results and gives your computer instructions on how to use these to calculate various things to display in your browser window, for example a results table ranked in order of score. Most web browsers' standard settings on installation allow javascript to be run on web pages, although allowing this does marginally increase the risk of virus transmission from visiting this website, should anyone hack into the Servers of the ISPs I use and maliciously (and cleverly) alter files, to give your computer a set of instructions to do something you wouldn't want it to do. That said, the scope of the javascript programming language is extremely limited, and there are far easier and nastier ways to mess up your computer if someone was so inclined. Enabling javascript on your web browser poses less risk to the user than routinely opening e-mail and e-mail attachments. If you are of a highly nervous disposition, or have no anti-virus software installed, you probably should not be on the web anyway, but blocking javascript is a little like saying "I'm going on holiday to America, but I'm not going to take the 6 hour 1st class flight because it's too risky. I'll travel by container ship for 2 weeks instead". That being said, this is not a commercial site, and I can't take any responsibility for it's safety or for problems arising from how you choose to use it.

Downloading And Using The
Results Excel
Spreadsheet You can download the results table from the website, towards the bottom of the Results page. To open this file you will need a zip program and Microsoft Excel 95 or higher (although my version is 2000, and I occasionally forget to save in the older format). In any event Microsoft makes available a free Excel Viewer - as Microsoft tend to move their web page addresses regularly, any direct link will be quickly out of date, so go to www.microsoft.com and type in "Excel Viewer" into the Search box.. Alternatively, when viewing the table on the Results page, just highlight the contents of the table and use "copy and paste" to paste into your own spreadsheet, or even word processor program.

What Are Zip Files? I don't have a Zip Manager program.
(NOTE:- if you have Windows XP, your PC has the
built-in ability to read zip files, no extra software should be required) Got to http://free-backup-software.net/ to download a small Zip Manager. This is a Freeware program, which you can use to unzip files and create your own compressed (zip) files for your own purposes. |

What are PDF files, I can't open PDF documents?
Go to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readermain.html to download the latest free version of the Acrobat Reader (the Adobe web pages don't make it easy, but you're looking for the "download free Adobe Reader/Acrobat Reader"). |

How do I refresh a page?
First, try re-selecting the page you want to view from the menus again, and this will load a refreshed page. If that fails, in Internet Explorer, right click in a blank place in the page and select Refresh, rather than using the Refresh button in the toolbar. This will refresh the page representing your current location, rather than taking you back to the home page. In Mozilla and Opera, the right click menu item you need is "Reload". If that doesn't work, you have a problem that your browser is 'caching' web content too aggressively (IE 8 is particularly bad at this). Basically your PC is storing copies offline, and displaying that old copy next time you visit. In IE8 hold the SHIFT key down and click F12. In the Developer window click on the Cache menu and select Clear Browser Cache For This Domain. Then refresh the page.

Internet Explorer is blocking "pop-ups"
so I can't see some of the information provided The TGGPC website has been specifically designed for most information to be provided without the use of "pop-up" windows. In most cases, a choice is given to users to display information "in-page" or by "pop-up" window, with the default setting being to display "in-page". As such most "pop-up" problems can be avoided. If you are having problems with "pop-ups", a likely cause of this is as a result of changes to the default settings in Internet Explorer introduced by Windows XP Service Pack 2. To check whether the PC you are using is running Windows XP SP2, click the button below. About Windows XP SP2 After installing SP2, the first time you get a pop-up window from any website in Internet Explorer, you will be prompted as to whether you want to allow this or not. After some useful information prompts, across the top of the page, below the toolbar buttons, an information banner will appear which if clicked will provide several options. These are; 1) Temporarily allow Pop-ups (I believe this applies to only the current page for the extent of the current session) 2) Always allow Pop-ups from this site 3) Settings........-> a) Turn off Pop-up blocker, b) Show information bar for Pop-ups, and c) More Settings..... I recommend clicking 2) in this list, which is the easiest way to allow pop-ups from the TGGPC website, and if you don't visit a lot of friends and family type websites, this is fine and STOP READING HERE! There is however one drawback, although the chances of coming across it are remote. The TGGPC website is not actually hosted at www.tggpc.co.uk (if it were, dealing with the pop-up issue would be straightforward!) but this is just a forwarding page to a website server at a widely used ISP. The consequence is that if you click option 2) above, you will see a prompt coming up to confirm allowing pop-ups from myweb.tiscali.co.uk - that is the ISP's web server address, not just my space on it. Therefore if you do click "OK", if you visit ANY website hosted by Lineone (which is not particularly likely, as they've been taken over and are closed to new customers) you'll not be able to disable any pop-ups from those sites, without disabling the TGGPC ones as well. It shouldn't be a problem, but I thought I'd better warn you........

My position in the Results table is
different on the website to the Pit Lane Prowler's results
The Pit lane Prowler's spreadsheet can only be sorted for tiebreaks manually, with a maximum of 3 races taken into account for differentiating ties, and so the full sorting won't be done until the end of the season, which is when prizes are decided. However, the table on the website shows team positions with full tiebreak sorting at all times. |
